ECO4 — Energy Company Obligation

Free

ECO4 funds free insulation and heating upgrades for low-income households. Energy companies are obligated by the government to deliver these improvements at no cost to qualifying homeowners and tenants.

Great British Insulation Scheme

Free or subsidised

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) provides free or heavily subsidised loft insulation and cavity wall insulation for homes rated EPC D–G. Unlike ECO4, eligibility is based on your property's EPC rating — not your income.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

£7,500 grant

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) offers a £7,500 grant toward the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. The grant is claimed by your approved installer and deducted from your bill — you don't need to apply yourself.

Covers: Air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps

Who qualifies: Properties in England and Wales replacing a gas or oil boiler. Installer must be MCS-certified.

Local authority schemes
